With a strong academic background and a passion for helping children navigate their mental health challenges, Meagen’s journey into the field of social work and psychotherapy has been marked by continuous growth and a deep commitment to her clients’ well-being.
Meagen completed her Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) at the University of Windsor in 2005 and her Master of Social Work (MSW) at Wayne State University in 2006. Her early career was shaped by placements in various settings, including the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Windsor Children’s Aid Society, and Glengarda Child and Family Services. These experiences solidified her interest in working with children and addressing their mental health needs.
In 2006, Meagen relocated from Windsor and began working at the Children’s Aid Society of Middlesex. Her passion for trauma-informed care and clinical work led her to join Amanda Bell and Associates in 2012. Meagen has since received training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and play therapy, enhancing her ability to support children and families dealing with trauma.
Outside of her professional life, Meagen is a devoted mother, often found driving her children to their various activities as a hockey and ringette mom. She enjoys listening to audiobooks during these drives, finding both professional and fictional narratives enriching. Meagen also loves spending time outdoors, hiking, and embracing the natural world.
Reflecting on her 15 years in child welfare, Meagen acknowledges the mixed impacts of the system on families. These experiences have fueled her desire to improve her trauma-informed practice continually. She finds profound fulfillment in witnessing the slow but significant changes in her clients, from building self-confidence to improving family communication and fostering a sense of safety and security.
Engagement is a cornerstone of Meagen’s practice. She meets children and families where they are, providing information and truth in a digestible manner. Her commitment to continuous learning is evident in her pursuit of professional development, particularly in EMDR, attachment, trauma, and ADHD. Meagen’s love for audiobooks complements her learning journey, allowing her to stay updated with the latest developments in her field.
Meagen’s path to becoming a therapist was not without its challenges. She faced academic struggles due to a learning disability but persevered, driven by a desire to make a difference. The support and guidance from mentors and clients alike have been invaluable in her growth. She believes in the importance of a positive support network for therapists and emphasizes the need for professional consultation and support.
Working in child welfare has taught Meagen to remain grounded and present with her clients. She understands that while she can provide tools and strategies, the individuals themselves must make the changes. Her approach is rooted in the family systems model, and she continuously seeks to enhance her skills and knowledge, particularly in EMDR and trauma-informed care.
Meagen Knapek’s journey as a therapist is characterized by resilience, continuous learning, and a deep commitment to her clients’ well-being.
