Michelle McIntyre is a seasoned professional in the field of social work and psychotherapy, with a career that spans over two decades. Her journey into this field is a testament to her dedication to helping others and her continuous pursuit of knowledge and growth.

Michelle completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Brescia University College in 1994, followed by a Bachelor of Social Work degree at King’s University College in 1996. She furthered her education with a Master of Social Work degree from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2004. Initially aspiring to become a teacher, Michelle’s path changed when a close mentor recognized her innate skills and suggested she consider social work. This pivotal moment led her to a fulfilling career dedicated to supporting children and families.

Beginning her career at the Children’s Aid Society of London & Middlesex, Michelle started as a Child Protection Worker in Ongoing Services. In 1996, she transitioned to a Child Abuse Intervention Specialist, working with children and families affected by intrafamilial sexual abuse. During this time, she co-facilitated children’s groups and began her long-term collaboration with Amanda Bell. By 2006, Michelle took on a supervisory role, overseeing several critical programs related to child abuse and domestic violence, and managing the training and development of staff and students.

Despite her administrative responsibilities, Michelle’s passion for direct clinical practice remained strong. In 2015, she made the significant decision to leave child welfare and focus on direct clinical intervention with Amanda Bell and Associates. This move allowed her to return to her true calling—working closely with clients to facilitate their healing and growth.

Outside of her professional life, Michelle enjoys traveling, spending time outdoors, and engaging in water activities. She finds joy in the warmth of the sunshine and the tranquility of the ocean, whether she’s snorkeling or floating on an inflatable tube. These activities, along with spending quality time with her family, help her maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Throughout her career, Michelle has faced numerous challenges that have contributed to her professional growth. She emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and integrating lessons learned from each experience. Her ability to be kind and compassionate to herself, while maintaining a growth mindset, has been crucial in her development as a therapist.

The most rewarding moments in Michelle’s career involve witnessing the transformative power of therapy, particularly through Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Observing clients move through their distressing experiences to a place of visible healing is a deeply gratifying experience for her.

Michelle’s clients have taught her the importance of individualized care and the need for a therapeutic relationship built on trust and co-regulation. She understands that her calm and grounded nature helps clients achieve their own sense of regulation, which is essential for effective therapy.

As a lifelong learner, Michelle is committed to staying updated with the latest developments in her field. She engages in continuous professional development through readings, specialized trainings, and memberships in professional organizations like EMDRIA. This commitment ensures that she can meet the evolving needs of her clients effectively.

Michelle’s journey into social work was influenced by a close mentor who recognized her potential. This guidance, combined with her own intrinsic motivation, led her to a rewarding career. She advises new therapists to be compassionate with themselves and to view their career as a continuous learning process. Developing strong therapeutic relationships and practicing good self-care are key to sustaining a long and fulfilling career.

Balancing self-care with professional responsibilities is a priority for Michelle. She schedules time for herself and her family, engages in activities that bring joy, and practices what she advises her clients to do. This integrity, both professionally and personally, is a core aspect of her approach to therapy.
